About the Gateway Airport
Originally Williams Airbase, the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport was built in 1941, and it was operated as a flight-training field for military pilots. The airport was witness to significant milestones when in 1944 it served as the first site of jet aircraft training, and in 1966 when it was the first site of the Undergraduate Pilot Training program (UPT).
The U.S. government operated Williams Airbase until 1993, when it was closed due to its costs. However, upon it’s closing, officials determined that with growing traffic at the Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, another airport in the area would be necessary. The facility reopened in 1994, after its runways were renovated to accommodate commercial jets. The airport now has 3 expansive runways, with daily flights connecting the western United States.
With a newly remodeled passenger terminal, convenient parking, and a location only 20 miles outside of Phoenix, the Gateway Airport in Arizona is as comfortable and accommodating as any major U.S. airport.
